Background of the Study

Access to clean water is a fundamental factor in public health, particularly in rural areas where waterborne diseases are prevalent. Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, has witnessed various local government initiatives aimed at improving access to safe drinking water, especially in underserved communities. Over the years, local government bodies have implemented water supply programs, including boreholes, water treatment facilities, and rainwater harvesting systems, with the aim of curbing waterborne diseases like cholera and dysentery.

Despite these efforts, water supply challenges continue to hinder public health improvement, with many communities still lacking reliable access to clean water. The role of local government in addressing these issues is critical, and evaluating the effectiveness of these programs in improving public health is necessary to ensure the sustainability of water supply interventions.

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of water supply programs implemented by Lokoja Local Government and their impact on public health in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Although several water supply initiatives have been launched in Lokoja, many communities still struggle with access to clean and safe drinking water. The prevalence of waterborne diseases remains a significant public health concern. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of local government water supply programs on public health, identify the challenges faced in their implementation, and provide recommendations for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of local government water supply programs in improving access to clean drinking water in Lokoja.

  2. To evaluate the impact of water supply programs on the reduction of waterborne diseases in the area.

  3. To identify challenges faced by Lokoja Local Government in the implementation of water supply programs and suggest possible solutions.

Research Questions

  1. How effective have local government water supply programs been in improving access to clean water in Lokoja?

  2. What is the impact of these water supply programs on public health and the reduction of waterborne diseases?

  3. What challenges does the local government face in implementing water supply programs, and how can these challenges be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Local government water supply programs have significantly improved access to clean water in Lokoja.

  2. There is a notable reduction in waterborne diseases as a result of improved access to clean water.

  3. Poor infrastructure, inadequate funding, and lack of public awareness are major challenges hindering the effectiveness of water supply programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on water supply programs implemented by Lokoja Local Government . Limitations include the challenge of quantifying the direct impact on public health and potential biases in responses from local government officials and community members.
